In order to really understand your position on something, such as universal healthcare, it is very important to take into consideration both sides. So many times people have opinions on topics but yet when you ask them to see your side they refuse. Stubborn people like that frustrate me, how can you be for something when you don’t fully understand the other side and the ideas you are arguing against. With this thought in mind I will try to argue for the other side of universal healthcare, which is that healthcare is a right. 

If healthcare were a right everyone would have the same opportunity to be healthy and make the best of their lives. I get sick very often and I know that if I had not been able to go to the doctor some of my sicknesses may have been more painful than necessary. Why put people thru pain and suffering when healthcare could be a right and improve life for every American. In our book Dorrien states, “Health care is a fundamental human right that should be available to all people regardless of their economic resources”. 

It is not fair that people who are less fortunate than others cannot receive the same care, being healthy like I said before is important. I enjoyed Redmounds article in our book and his main quote says that our profit driven healthcare system bullies and denies us a basic freedom. This is so true everyone should have the right to a healthy life. Think of how much more productive our country could be if everyone were healthy and able to put there all into their work. 

In class we discussed how Canada and Italy have universal healthcare. I decided to see what I could I find out and I was surprised. Everyone has said that after having universal healthcare and experiencing it they like it. I found a blog on Canada’s health care, the woman explains how she used to live in the U.S. and had kids in the U.S. However she was really worried about the pregnancy care in Canada and thought it would be worse. On the topic of the Cleveland Clinic, I think that if healthcare was made a right then more people would be able to have access to the Clinic. If that was the case maybe more people in Cuyahoga county would be healthier.
